License Plate Grading Standards
License Plates USA uses the industry standards set forth by the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association (ALPCA). Unless otherwise noted in the product description, all of our license plates are at least Very Good quality.
- Mint - Absolutely no flaws other than those that were on the plate from the manufacturer (paint fingerprint, sloppy paint from prison, etc.). Never used on a vehicle, and often in the original mailing envelope or packaging.
- Excellent - Minor flaws showing evidence of use on a vehicle, such as bolt hole markings on metal plates. Porcelains must have high gloss with only minor edge or bolt hole chipping.
- Very Good - Minor paint or surface fading or a few scratches, showing signs of use. No extra holes, drilled or nailed. No rust on front of plate. No retouching of paint or magic marker touchups on reflective tags. On porcelain plates, no chipping in informational content, such as state name, registration number, and date. Many leftover plates which were never used, but have some weather damage, will fall into this category.
- Good - Some minor surface deterioration. All metal intact, no tears. Obvious signs of use or deterioration, but still very display worthy. Closed pin holes and small nail holes on metal plates. Up to two aesthetically well-placed, drilled holes 1/8" or smaller. Some chipping in informational content on porcelain plates (ALPCA has in the past suggested no more than 2% foreground, 3% background). Leftover plates, plates with significant paint deterioration. Most defects on display not noticed from distance of 25 or more feet.
- Fair - Moderate to severe fading, light to moderate rust but all colors still visible on paint. Torn or damaged bolt holes. Drilled or nailed extra holes which cannot be closed up. Holes not aesthetically well-placed, such as in numbers or dates, which detract from appearance, and extra holes not larger than 1/4". No more than 20% enamel missing on porcelain plates, but underlying steel still intact. Some minor retouching. Most defects are obvious from distance of 25 feet or more but no difficulty distinguishing informational content.
- Poor - Heavy rust such that paint is mostly gone. Extra holes larger than 1/4" or parts of edges of plate missing. More than 20% enamel gone on porcelain plates. Cannot tell what the plate is or determine the informational content on a metal plate from distance of 25 feet or more.
